Vanilla fragrances

Real vanilla in perfume is nothing like the candle-aisle version. The orchid pod gives a scent that is warm, boozy, slightly smoky and leathery around its sweetness, and perfumers dose it anywhere from a whisper (rounding the base of Coco Mademoiselle) to a shout (the spiced vanilla spine of Le Male). It is the great softener: vanilla makes woods friendlier, spices cozier and florals more edible, and it clings to skin for hours after brighter notes are gone. Cold weather is its natural season; heat can turn a heavy dose syrupy. Smell Eros and Le Male side by side to hear the same note played sporty versus barbershop, then Tobacco Vanille for vanilla grown fully up.
