Black Orchid was the debut fragrance of the Tom Ford brand, launched in 2006 and marking Tom Ford's first signature release after his Estée Lauder collaborations. It was composed by David Apel and Pierre Negrin around an unusual black-truffle, dark-chocolate and patchouli accord paired with a fictional 'black orchid' floral, giving it a rich, gothic-glamour identity. Marketed as a luxurious unisex scent (though heavily favored by women), it became an instant icon of the brand and one of the most recognizable dark orientals of its era. Its boldness and divisiveness only added to its cult status, and it spawned numerous flankers including Velvet Orchid and Orchid Soleil. It helped establish Tom Ford as a serious perfume house from day one.
A bold, dark and unapologetically opulent oriental built on a strange but addictive truffle, black-chocolate and patchouli accord. It's polarizing and powerful — a statement scent, not a casual one.
