By the Fireplace launched in 2015 as part of Maison Margiela's Replica line, the collection that recreates specific memories and moments through scent, each labeled with a place and date. It was composed by Firmenich perfumer Marie Salamagne around a roasted-chestnut and woodsmoke theme using clove, guaiac wood and vanilla balsam to mimic the smell of a winter hearth. The fragrance became one of the line's breakout hits and is frequently cited as the Replica collection's most popular and best-selling release. Its accessible, gourmand-tinged smoky profile made it a gateway niche fragrance for many buyers and a perennial cold-weather recommendation. It has since been reissued in limited and intense editions while the original EDT remains a staple.
A warm, smoky-sweet evocation of roasting chestnuts beside a crackling fire, built on guaiac wood, clove and a soft vanilla balsam. It is comforting and easy to wear rather than aggressive, peaking in cold weather as a snug everyday cozy fragrance.
