The story

Layton launched in 2016 for Parfums de Marly, composed by Hamid Merati-Kashani as part of the house's equestrian-named lineup. It opens with a bright apple-and-lavender accord before settling into a warm, gourmand-leaning heart of geranium, violet and jasmine wrapped in vanilla, cardamom, pepper and creamy sandalwood. The blend struck a balance between fresh, sweet and spicy that proved enormously popular, helping propel Parfums de Marly from a niche curiosity into a mainstream powerhouse. Marketed as unisex but worn predominantly by men, it became one of the most reached-for 'safe blind buy' niche fragrances of the late 2010s. A more intense Layton Exclusif followed in 2017.

Our take

A plush, sweet vanilla-and-apple opening turns spicy with cardamom and pepper over creamy woods — comforting, sexy and very compliment-friendly. One of the niche releases that crossed firmly into mainstream popularity.
