La Vie Est Belle — 'Life Is Beautiful' — launched in autumn 2012 as Lancôme's answer to a generation of women who wanted their fragrance to feel celebratory rather than austere. The formula was the result of three years of development and reportedly more than five thousand versions, crafted by a trio of perfumers: Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion, and Olivier Polge. Their brief was to build around iris in a way that had never been done — not the cool, powdery iris of classic feminines, but iris warmed and enriched by a gourmand praline base. The resulting structure — black currant and iris on top, jasmine, rose, and patchouli in the heart, a deep base of tonka bean, praline, and vanilla — was genuinely new for a major commercial launch, a true 'iris gourmand' that sat at the intersection of fine fragrance and sweet indulgence. Actress Julia Roberts became the face of the campaign, her warmth and accessibility perfectly matched to the scent's philosophy. The bottle, a redesign of a classic Lancôme flacon from 1949, added a further layer of heritage. La Vie Est Belle became a commercial phenomenon — a giga-bestseller, in Fragrantica's own phrase — and is widely cited as one of the best-selling women's EDPs of the 2010s.
