Floral fragrances

Florals are the oldest idea in perfume and still the broadest: everything from a single soapy rose to a bouquet so abstract you cannot pick the petals apart. Modern florals split roughly in two. The classics, Chanel No. 5, J'adore, keep flowers polished and formal, the smell of an occasion. The newer school treats petals as one ingredient among many, so you get flowers over coffee in Black Opium or over candied fruit in La Vie Est Belle. Skin chemistry matters more here than in any other family: the same jasmine can read creamy on one person and sharp on another, so sample before you size up.
