Orange blossom is sunshine domesticated: the white flower of the bitter orange tree, smelling honeyed, green and soapy-clean all at once. It is the brightest of the white florals, less narcotic than jasmine, more innocent than tuberose, and perfumers use it to make scents feel happy without turning them sugary. Black Opium threads it through coffee and vanilla so the darkness smiles; La Vie Est Belle uses it as the fresh top over praline; Libre pits it against lavender in one of the great modern contrasts. It thrives in heat, which is why it owns Mediterranean perfumery. Distilled instead of extracted, the same flower becomes neroli, greener and colder; comparing the two is a proper little education.
