YSL Y is the fragrance that quietly took a share of the American clean-and-fresh market from Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel, and it is far easier to buy on sale than either of them. YSL Beauty is produced under license by a large beauty group and sold through Sephora, Ulta, Macy’s and the online discounters, all of which include it in their Black Friday events; Sephora’s tiered holiday sale and Ulta’s designer percentages have both covered YSL in recent years. So the discount will be there. The decision is which of four bottles that all say Y on the front, and that run from a green, airy EDT to a dense, incense-heavy Elixir, deserves it in late November. YSL discounts, so choose by scent

YSL Beauty behaves like Armani and Versace rather than like Chanel: the licensor sells wholesale and does not block promotions, so YSL fragrance is a regular in Sephora’s tiered holiday sale, on Ulta’s named designer lists, in Macy’s fragrance percentages, and below list at FragranceNet and Jomashop with a Thanksgiving-week code. In 2025 all of those channels ran in the last ten days of November. For a buyer this means the discount is a given and the attention belongs on the version, because the four Y bottles are a gradient from bright to dark rather than strengths of one scent, and the season you are buying in argues for the darker half.

Y EDP: the default, and the best sale value

The 2018 eau de parfum is the reason the line is a bestseller, and it is the Y most people should buy regardless of season. Dominique Ropion added a crisp green apple to the ginger and bergamot opening, kept the sage and juniper heart, and set it on amberwood, tonka, cedar and a quiet olibanum incense; it reads clean-cut and quietly warm, lasts seven to nine hours in owner reports, and projects politely enough for any office. Le Parfum: the season’s argument

The 2021 Le Parfum is where the line turns dark: a prominent lavender joins the geranium and sage, and the base is rebuilt around patchouli, incense and tonka with the woods pushed deeper. It reads moodier and more evening-appropriate than the EDP, lasts eight to ten hours, and projects more in its first hours. Its case on Black Friday is timing. A Le Parfum bought in late November goes straight into fall and winter wear, the season it was built for, and stays in season until March. Sephora and the department stores have both discounted it, and it is the right buy for someone who already owns the EDP and wants a second Y for cooler months, or who thought the EDP was too clean and wanted depth. It is the wrong buy for a hot climate or as a strictly office scent.

The Elixir: buy it if you already know

The 2024 Elixir is the newest, strongest and least discounted Y, appearing mainly in Sephora’s tiered event and department store promotions rather than at discounters, which have had less time to build stock. It pushes the Le Parfum direction further, with spicier ginger, lavender and geranium over pronounced vetiver, incense and patchouli, and owner reports put it at ten hours and beyond with heavy early projection. As a Black Friday buy it is excellent for one kind of person: someone who already knows they like the dark, aromatic end of the line and wants the boldest version for cold nights and going out. It is not a first Y and not an office scent, and two or three sprays are plenty. If that is you, a November discount is the moment. If you are not sure, buy the EDP or Le Parfum and revisit the Elixir once you know.

The EDT: leave it for spring

The 2017 eau de toilette is the green, aldehydic, least sweet Y, and a lovely summer fragrance that deserves more attention than it gets. It will be discounted in November like the rest of the line. It is still the wrong November purchase for most people, because it is a hot-weather scent with the shortest wear of the four, and YSL discounts continuously enough that it will be on sale again in spring when you would actually wear it. The exception is a buyer who specifically wants the greenest, most distinctive Y and finds an exceptional price; otherwise the same money buys a Le Parfum that you will wear the week it arrives.

Where each version drops furthest

Sephora’s tiered holiday sale is the strongest single event for the Y line because it covers all four versions, with the percentage depending on your loyalty tier; join the program before November and buy in your tier’s first hours. Ulta’s designer events have included YSL at a flat percentage with loyalty points on top, strong on the EDP.
