Black Friday perfume: should you buy the gift set or the bottle?

Buy the gift set when the extra items are things you would actually buy, typically a travel spray of the same fragrance, and the set costs no more than the bottle alone at the sale price plus a little. Every Black Friday the fragrance floor splits in two: bottles at a percentage, and boxed sets at a bigger percentage. Retailers discount sets harder because sets are assembled for the holidays and have to be gone by January, and because the perceived value of three items in a box is higher than the sum of their sale prices. Sometimes the set is the best fragrance deal of the week. Sometimes it is a way to sell you a body lotion. Why sets are discounted harder

Fragrance gift sets are seasonal inventory. They are assembled for the holidays, boxed in holiday packaging, and worth much less to a retailer on January 2 than on November 27, so they carry deeper percentages and appear in “up to 50 percent” headlines far more than bottles do. They also let a retailer advertise a large saving against a reference price that adds up the components at list, which few people would have paid. None of this makes sets bad. It means the percentage on a set is measured differently from the percentage on a bottle, and the two are only comparable once you translate the set into what it would cost to buy the pieces you actually want.

The one-minute arithmetic

Find the same fragrance in the same concentration and size as the set’s main bottle, on its own, at the sale price. That is your baseline. Then look at what else is in the set and decide, honestly, which items you would buy if they were sold separately. Add the value of only those items, at what you would pay for them, to nothing else. If the set price is at or below the baseline plus the value of the items you actually want, the set is the better buy. If the set price is above that, the difference is what you are paying for the items you do not want, and the bottle wins. The most common result is that a set containing a travel spray of the same fragrance is worth it, and a set containing a body lotion and a pouch is not.

The contents that count, and the ones that do not

When the fragrance is for you, the case for the set weakens. You do not need retail holiday packaging, you may already own a travel atomizer, and the padding items are the ones you would never buy. The bottle alone at the Black Friday percentage is usually the better buy, and for a fragrance you already own and are replacing, a tester from an established discounter is the deepest legitimate saving available, often another 20 to 30 percent below the unboxed price for the identical liquid. Reserve the set for the case where it includes a travel spray you genuinely want at little extra cost. Otherwise let the gift sets go to the people buying gifts.
