Kindle Scribe buying guide: pens, folios, and which one fits
Updated June 2026
The Kindle Scribe is a 10.2-inch e-ink reader with stylus support for handwritten notes. The 2024 Premium Pen works with both the 2022 and 2024 Scribe. Leather and plant-based folios fit both generations; the fabric folio fits only the 2022. None of these covers fit the 11-inch Scribe Colorsoft.

The Kindle Scribe is Amazon's write-on e-reader, and buying the right accessories for it requires knowing which model year you own. There are two 10.2-inch Scribe generations — the 2022 original and the 2024 update — that share a chassis and use the same pens and most of the same covers, but one folio in this lineup fits only the older model. This guide walks through every pen and folio option with honest guidance on material, compatibility, and who each is for.

What the Kindle Scribe is (and is not)
The Kindle Scribe is a 10.2-inch e-ink reader that accepts stylus input — you can take handwritten margin notes, fill out documents, and use it as a digital notebook. It is not a backlit LCD tablet, cannot run apps or stream video, and is intentionally distraction-free. Any book you already own via Amazon reads on it without any subscription. That said, Kindle Unlimited — a separate paid monthly or annual subscription — is what unlocks the full Amazon lending library and enables some of the AI-assisted note features. Plan accordingly. Critically: there are two 10.2-inch Scribe generations (2022 and 2024) that share the same chassis dimensions, plus a separate 11-inch Kindle Scribe Colorsoft released in 2025. None of the covers in this guide fit the Colorsoft. The accessories below are covers and a pen only — the Scribe device itself is sold separately on Amazon.
Should you upgrade to the 2024 Premium Pen?
The 2024 Premium Pen in Metallic Jade (ASIN B0D2F7T5M6) is a battery-free Wacom EMR stylus — no charging, no pairing, just pick it up and write. It works with both the 2022 and 2024 Kindle Scribe releases and will not work with any other Kindle model. Every package includes the pen, five replacement nibs, and a tip replacement tool. The real upgrade over the original Basic Pen is a softer rubber eraser on the end you flip to erase, plus a shortcut button that you can assign to switch between pen, fountain pen, marker, pencil, highlighter, eraser, or sticky note mode. The pen magnetically attaches to the side of the Scribe and fits the pen slot in every folio cover below. Buy it if you own a 2022 Scribe and want to step up from the included Basic Pen, or if you lost or damaged your pen. If you bought the 2024 Scribe, a Premium Pen was included in the box — you do not need to buy another unless you want the Jade colorway.
Pros
- Battery-free stylus — no charging, works immediately every time
- Softer rubber eraser feels more natural than the original
- Configurable shortcut button with more assignable functions than the previous generation
- Compatible with both 2022 and 2024 Scribe; fits all folio pen holders
Cons
- No benefit for 2024 Scribe owners who already have a pen included
- Works only with the Scribe — not transferable to other Kindle models
- Five included nibs will eventually need replacing
Folio covers compared: fabric, leather, and plant-based
Four distinct folio materials are available, and compatibility is the first thing to check. The Fabric Folio (Black) is a slim, lower-cost option designed exclusively for the first-generation 2022 Kindle Scribe — Amazon has not confirmed it fits the 2024 model's chassis, so 2024 owners should skip it. It has a fabric exterior, microfiber interior, and a built-in stand at two angles, but it is notably the entry option in this lineup. The two genuine leather folios — the Premium Leather Folio (Black) and the Leather Folio with Magnetic Attach (Black) — use leather from Leather Working Group Gold-rated suppliers, a meaningful quality certification. Both fit the 2022 and 2024 Scribe, include a pen holder and auto wake/sleep sensor, and fold into a stand. The Plant-Based Leather Folio (Black) is made from 76% renewable bio-materials — specifically non-GMO corn and Forest Stewardship Council-certified viscose fiber — manufactured in Italy, with 24% polyurethane binder. It looks and feels comparable to genuine leather but carries a smaller environmental footprint. It also fits both the 2022 and 2024 Scribe. All folios use a magnetic-attach system: the Scribe clips directly to the folio frame rather than snapping into a plastic shell, which keeps the overall profile significantly slimmer than traditional case designs.
Color and SKU variants: black, jade, and merlot
Amazon's leather folio lineup can look confusing in search results because there are two distinct ASINs for what appear to be very similar black leather folios. B0DQNBFB59 (the Leather Folio with Magnetic Attach, Black) and B0DXX461VR (a newer SKU introduced in May 2025 in a deeper warm-toned colorway consistent with Amazon's Merlot palette) are functionally identical leather folios. Both use Leather Working Group Gold-certified genuine leather, both fit the 2022 and 2024 Scribe, and both include the pen holder and wake/sleep sensor. The only meaningful difference is the color. The Merlot variant is the standout gift finish — the warm, deep tone reads more distinctive than basic black. The plant-based folio also comes in Jade, which pairs well with a Metallic Jade Scribe and pen. Choose by color and which finish disappears or complements your Scribe. Always check the listing's compatibility line before purchasing, since Amazon occasionally refreshes SKUs without changing the product description in obvious ways.
How to pick: a practical decision path
Start with your Scribe model. If you have the 2022 Scribe, every cover in this guide fits — but only the fabric folio was explicitly designed for your generation. The leather and plant-based folios are the better long-term investment: they fit both generations and have more durable, professional materials. If you have the 2024 Scribe, skip the fabric folio entirely; choose between genuine leather (durable, professional, ages with patina) and plant-based leather (eco-conscious, Italian-made, comparable feel). If you own the 2025 Kindle Scribe Colorsoft with its larger 11-inch display, none of these covers fit — stop here. For the pen: buy the 2024 Premium Pen only if you are upgrading a 2022 Scribe from the Basic Pen, or replacing a lost or damaged pen. A 2024 Scribe already comes with a Premium Pen. Finally, factor in the ongoing cost: Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid subscription and is not required to read books you own, but it does unlock the full lending library and some AI note tools. If you mainly read your own purchases, you can skip it. MySecretCart links through to Amazon at the same price as buying direct, so you can check the 365-day price history and set alerts for any of these before Prime Day.
The verdict
For most 2024 Scribe owners: the Plant-Based Leather Folio or the Merlot leather folio, depending on whether sustainability or rich patina matters more to you. For 2022 Scribe owners who want to upgrade: the genuine leather magnetic folio plus the 2024 Premium Pen. Skip the fabric folio unless you specifically want the lowest-cost 2022-only option. Remember the Scribe device, a Kindle Unlimited subscription, and any pen are all separate purchases.
Who should skip this
Skip every cover here if you own the 11-inch Kindle Scribe Colorsoft — none of these fit its larger chassis. Skip the fabric folio if you own the 2024 Scribe (compatibility is not confirmed). Skip the 2024 Premium Pen if your 2024 Scribe already shipped with one. And if you mostly read purchased books and do not annotate, a Paperwhite does the same core job at a lower total cost — the Kindle Scribe vs Paperwhite guide covers that comparison in detail.
Frequently asked
Will a folio made for the 2022 Kindle Scribe fit the 2024 Kindle Scribe?
The genuine leather folios and the plant-based leather folio are confirmed compatible with both the 2022 and 2024 Kindle Scribe releases, which share the same 10.2-inch chassis dimensions. The fabric folio is designed specifically for the 2022 release and fit on the 2024 model has not been confirmed — avoid it if you own the newer generation.
Does the Kindle Scribe come with a pen, or do I have to buy one?
Both the 2022 and 2024 Kindle Scribe come with a pen included in the box. The 2022 model shipped with the Basic Pen; the 2024 model ships with the Premium Pen. You only need to buy the 2024 Premium Pen separately if you want to upgrade from a Basic Pen on a 2022 Scribe, or if you lost or damaged your included pen.
Do these covers fit the 11-inch Kindle Scribe Colorsoft?
No. The five folios in this guide are all sized for the 10.2-inch Kindle Scribe (2022 and 2024 releases), and the 2024 Premium Pen is built for the same 10.2-inch Scribe as well. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft has an 11-inch display and different chassis dimensions. Amazon sells separate accessories for the Colorsoft.
Do I need a Kindle Unlimited subscription to use the Kindle Scribe?
No. Any book you have already purchased through Amazon reads on the Scribe without any subscription. Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid monthly or annual subscription that unlocks access to the full lending library and enables some AI-assisted note features. It is optional for people who primarily read books they own.
Genuine leather vs plant-based folio — which should I choose?
Both fit the 2022 and 2024 Scribe and offer comparable protection and the same magnetic-attach, auto wake/sleep, and pen holder features. Choose the genuine leather folio if you prefer a material that ages with patina and feel over time — it uses Leather Working Group Gold-certified leather. Choose the plant-based folio if reducing environmental impact matters to you; it is made from 76% renewable bio-materials (non-GMO corn and FSC-certified viscose fiber) manufactured in Italy and does not involve animal-derived materials, though it does not fully replicate real leather's patina.
